Loving Yourself First

In these tumultuous times, self-care and positive family relationships aren’t just nice to have; they are necessary.

So many of us pour our energy into caring for others, often without realizing how little care we give ourselves in return. There is nothing wrong with loving and supporting the people around you… But that care loses its strength when you are falling apart inside.

The greatest gift you can give others is a healthy, grounded, whole version of yourself. Loving yourself first teaches people how to love you in return. When you invest time in understanding how and when you need care, rest, and affection, you set the standard for how others show up for you.

If you are not first and foremost in your own life, you cannot be first and foremost in anyone else’s.

In my own life, my husband and I intentionally step away from everyday routines to reconnect not only with each other but also with ourselves. We give one another the space to reflect, reset, and grow. Because of that, we return stronger, individually and together.

Sometimes that means:

  • Having honest conversations about difficult things that need healing or change
  • Looking inward and asking what we personally need to become a better version of ourselves
  • Choosing growth over comfort so we can move forward with more love and intention

Your partner, and really, anyone close to you, should inspire you to become better, not smaller. When I met my husband, I told him he made me want to be a better version of myself. I still feel that today. And being a better me means caring for myself spiritually, mentally, and physically.

At the end of the day, I love life; all of it. The ups and downs, the joy and the sorrow. And because I love life, I choose to live it fully and for as long as possible. To do that… I must take care of myself.

Simple Self-Care Practices to Start Today

If you’re not sure where to begin, try adding small, meaningful moments of care into your routine:

Mental & Emotional Care

  • Journal your thoughts and feelings without judgment
  • Set boundaries and honor them
  • Take breaks from the news and social media
  • Speak kindly to yourself; your inner voice matters

Physical Care

  • Take a quiet walk outdoors and breathe deeply
  • Stretch your body each morning or evening
  • Drink more water and nourish yourself with whole foods
  • Prioritize restful sleep

Spiritual & Inner Connection

  • Practice meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection
  • Spend time in nature to reset your energy
  • Express gratitude daily, even for small things
  • Create moments of stillness and silence

Relational Care

  • Schedule intentional time with loved ones
  • Have honest conversations that bring clarity and growth
  • Give and receive space when needed

Self-care is not selfish; it is sustaining. When you love yourself well, you show up stronger, kinder, and more present for the life you are living and the people you cherish.
